Black Cohosh
What is it?
A plant native to North America that grows up to 2.5m high and is distinguished by its tall stalks of fluffy white flowers.
What does it do?
An increasingly popular remedy for hot flushes, excessive sweating, vaginal dryness and other menopausal symptoms. Scientific study has shown that it can reduce the levels of Luteinising Hormone. The rise in Luteinising Hormone is thought to be one of causes of hot flushes.
Common Uses
Reduces menopausal symptoms, eases menstrual pain, works as an anti-inflammatory, relieves muscle pain, helps to clear mucous membranes and to relieve coughs.
Dosage
For menopausal or PMS symptoms: Take 40mg of black cohosh extract twice a day. For PMS, begin treatment a week to 10 days before the start of your period. For Menstrual cramps: take 40mg three or four times a day as needed.
Caution
Never use Black Cohosh while pregnant or breast feeding. The herb may interfere with hormonal medications such as the pill. Avoid Black Cohosh if you are receiving medication for hypertension; it may intensify the drug's effect of lowering blood pressure.
