Bromelain

What is it?

A digestive enzyme with anti-inflammatory properties derived from the pineapple plant.

What does it do?

A powerful anti-inflammatory agent which can reduce pain, swelling, and promote tissue repair. Its effectiveness is thought to spring from its inhibitory effect on prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation.

Common Uses

Reduces pain and swelling caused by minor injuries, aids healing of wounds and post-operative recovery, reduces mucous congestion in bronchitis and sinusitis, helps in the digestion of protein.

Dosage

A typical recommended dose of bromelain is between 250mg and 500mg three times a day and should be taken on a empty stomach.

Caution - Do not take bromelain supplements if you have an allergy to pineapple. Because bromelain acts as a blood thinner, it should be avoided by anyone taking anti-coagulant drugs.

Caution - Consult your doctor before taking supplements, especially if you have a medical condition or are pregnant.
