Calcium
What is it?
A mineral that is essential for healthy bones and teeth as well as blood clotting and muscle contraction.
What does it do?
The majority of the body's calcium is find in bones and teeth to provide strength and support to these tissues. A small amount circulating in the bloodstream helps to move nutrients across cell membranes and plays a role in producing the hormones and enzymes that regulate digestion and metabolism. Calcium is also needed for normal communication between nerve cells and for blood clotting, wound healing and muscle contraction.
Common Uses
Maintains healthy bones and teeth, prevents osteoporosis, aids hear and muscle contraction, nerve impulses and blood clotting.
Dosage
700mg of elemental calcium a day preferably from foods, or a supplemented diet.
Caution
People with thyroid or kidney disease should seek medical advice before taking calcium, calcium may interact with some drugs, notably the tetracycline antibiotics.
