Chromium

What is it?

Chromium is a trace mineral.

What does it do?

Chromium helps the body to use insulin, a hormone that transfers blood sugar to cells where it is burned as fuel. A sufficient chromium intake may prevent diabetes in people with insulin resistance. Chromium also helps to break down fats, so it may reduce LDL ("Bad") cholesterol and increase HDL ("Good") cholesterol levels, thus lowering the risk of heart disease.

Common Uses

Essential for the break down of protein, fat and carbohydrates. May lower total blood cholesterol.

Dosage

Scientists believe that 50-200 mcg a day can prevent a deficiency in adults.

Caution

People with diabetes should consult their doctor before taking Chromium. This mineral may alter the dosage for insulin or other diabetes medications.

Caution - Consult your doctor before taking supplements, especially if you have a medical condition or are pregnant.
