Liquorice

What is it?

From the liquorice plant root which is a member of the pea family.

What does it do?

The glycyrrhizin in liquorice stimulates the adrenal glands to produce certain hormones, reduces inflammation and increases the levels of interferon, a virus-fighting substance manufactured by the immune system. There is another form DGL or deglycyrrhizinated liquorice which works differently to the one above.

Common Uses

Reduces symptoms of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Helps digestive problems. Helps to treat eczema. Promotes hepatitis recovery. Enhances immunity. Eases respiratory illness.

Dosage

For inflammatory conditions, fatigue and other disorders: Take liquorice root extract three time a day in 200 mg capsules or tablets. For eczema: Apply cream the affected area three or four times a day.

Caution

A key component of liquorice called glycyrrhizin raises blood pressure. You should therefore avoid liquorice if you have heart, kidney or liver disease, or high blood pressure; are pregnant, or are taking diuretics or digitalis. DGL liquorice, however, is fine.
