Selenium
What is it?
A trace mineral essential for many body processes.
What does it do?
Acts as an anti-oxidant. It is part of an anti-oxidant enzyme (called glutathione peroxidase).
Common Uses
Works with vitamin E to help to prevent cancer and heart disease. Protects against cataracts and macular degeneration. Fights viral infections; reduces the severity of cold sores and shingles; may slow down the development of HIV/AIDS. Helps to relieve lupus symptoms.
Dosage
Between 100 and 200 mcg daily.
Caution
Don't exceed recommended doses: long term absorption of high doses of selenium - as little as 900mcg a day - can cause serious side effects, such as skin rashes, nausea, fatigue, hair loss, fingernail changes and depression.
Caution - Consult your doctor before taking supplements, especially if you have a medical condition or are pregnant.
